What is the ECA Scheme?

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme enables companies to claim a 100% first year capital allowance on investments in certain energy saving equipment appearing on the Energy Technology List (ETL), against the taxable profits of the period of investment.

Capital allowances enable businesses to write off the capital cost of purchasing new equipment including compressors, ancillary equipment such as dryers and energy saving electronic controllers, against their taxable profits. Additional benefits of purchasing ECA qualifying energy efficient technologies could include: improved cash flow, lower energy bills, reduction in Climate Change Levy or CRC payment.

Any compressor system needs to controlled correctly if you want to avoid higher energy costs. This is especially true when the system includes multiple compressors and where if not controlled correctly compressors may be inefficient due to excessive off load running and idling, over pressure generation and too many stop/start incidents amongst others.

Our intelligent multi control system - POWERNET is a load dependent control system that constantly monitors your demands and then looks to optimise the operation of the compressors to maximise efficiency. This may involve the shutting down and starting of the compressors in various combinations or sequences in order to avoid costly off load running and idling ( Compressors can consume 30% to 60% of the total on load power consumption, even though they may be off load and producing nothing!). The pressure band optimisation ensures that over pressure generation is avoided and again this saving can be significant (a further 6-8%)

Compressed air is an invaluable power source for all sectors of industry, however it can be expensive and usually accounts for 12-15% of the total energy consumption for the plant. It therefore makes a great deal of business sense to understand your system and more specifically how to plug in to more efficient methods of production and the elimination of wasted energy due to inefficient operation and leaks etc.

The best way to determine the potential for saving energy from your compressed air system is to carry out an energy audit which involves the use of a data logger. The data logger is usually installed on site for a 7/8 day period and during this time fully monitors the system measuring the amount of air delivered, the amount of energy consumed and the network pressure during operation. This information is invaluable when considering new equipment or when looking to save energy by focusing on controls or maintenance (leaks) issues.

A comprehensive set of data and report is supplied following the exercise along with recommendations. Our data logging equipment is state of the art and totally reliable and provides very accurate analysis of your system. Air compressors are clearly designed to generate an important energy source for industry, but they also generate a lot of heat during operation. This heat is present in the coolant of the compressor and in the air that is used to cool this coolant and indeed the compressed air. The electric motor that operates the compressor also generates heat. Typically all of this energy is wasted however using our heat recovery systems it is very easy to recoup this wasted energy for use in space heating and indeed the heating of water for washrooms or indeed any where hot or heated water is useful up to 70C.

Space heating
Space heating is a relatively simple way to divert the heated air that is generated by the cooling system and the electric motor. The heated air can be directed or ducted to an area where the heat is use full it is also normal to have provision to divert the heated air during summer time for instance. Dependent of the distance to the point of use it may be necessary to employ insulation to the ducting or an additional fan to maintain the correct flow.

Water heating.
Using an additional coolant to water heat exchanger connected to the compressors cooling circuit, it is possible to recover significant amounts of energy for the generation of heated water up to 70C. These heat exchangers can be fitted to most of our rotary screw compressors when supplied and in this case the installation is very convenient. We are also able to fit heat exchangers to existing compressors, subject to operating conditions and installation.

The availability of this essentially free energy source is driving much more awareness of this very attractive energy saving solution.
